8.1 Auralizing a dataset

Listening to a dataset

In SOURCE, you can listen to all the datasets that are in the time domain, both inputs and results.

To listen to a dataset, complete the following steps:

  1. Create a time plot of the dataset.
  2. Press the Play button .

If there is more than one plot in the Graphs card, you have to select the desired one from the drop-down menu.

Audio playback

Audio settings

When auralizing a dataset, you can:

  • Move the cursor to the desired position in the dataset.
  • Set a maximum volume, by ticking Full Scale and setting a maximum value.

If the Full Scale feature is not activated, the maximum value of the plotted channel is used as the maximum level of the audio card.

If you want to compare different datasets, it is important to tick the Full Value box and set a maximum value. This value will be used for all the datasets that are played back.

You can change multiple audio settings in the Preferences.

Filtering a dataset

In some cases, you might need to filter the input data when performing the auralization of the results. This could be the case, for example, if the dataset presents some noisy frequencies or if there are some “clicking” noises.

To add a low-pass or high-pass filter during an analysis, complete the next steps:

  1. Create an analysis (see more instructions here).
  2. Select the analysis and open the Settings.
  3. In the Time Domain Conversion group, type a cutoff frequency (in Hz) for the High-pass filter, Low-pass filter or both.
  4. Press Enter.

Both filters are applied to the spectral data before being converted to the time domain. The filters approximate a Butterworth response with a filter order of 8 and zero phase delay.
